Being an athlete comes with a great deal of physical and mental exertion—even more so as an ultra runner. Don Reichelt is a professional ultra runner holding a U.S. 24-hour national title and three world records, and we’re lucky enough to have him as a Previnex Ambassador! While he never intended to run professionally, he found joy in pursuing athletics and health, and that joy goes far beyond the thrill of competition.
Becoming an Ultra Runner
“My health journey isn’t just while I’m running competitively. My health journey means that I need to keep my body moving as well as possible for as long as possible. I would rather do what it takes to keep running in my 80s than ever win another race again. Life-long health is everything.”
Don started his health and fitness journey as an overweight, ex-collegiate rower looking for a fitness outlet. After putting on around 50 pounds post-graduation, he knew a change was needed. For the first time in his life had no coach telling him what to do, how to do it, and when. He knew focusing on nutrition and exercise was a must, so he started with biking, moved onto triathlon, and landed on ultra running.
Part of being an athlete is pushing your body, applying healthy pressure to help you reach goals and achieve new milestones, all leading to your health and longevity. Don shared with us that he is ultimately driven by curiosity, which guides his desire to continue training. “How far can I run in a day? How fast can I run 100 miles? The day will come when I can no longer do this, but today is not that day.”
